Subject description
This subject is concerned with the study of the legal regime governing health, safety and welfare of people at work. Its focus will be the model Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Work, Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW) and the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Understand and analyse the causes of workplace accidents;
2.
Explain the major legal principles concerning laws with respect to work health and safety;
3.
Critically evaluate the functions, interests, and limitations of the current system with respect to the legal regulation of Work Health and Safety law in Australia, with a particular focus on NSW;
4.
Demonstrate familiarity with the main provisions of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW)
5.
Analyse and interpret court decisions from a legal perspective; and
6.
Analyse current issues and reforms in WH&S law, (in particular the movement towards harmonisation of work health and safety law systems in Australia) and assess whether these developments are appropriate for the legal regulation of health and safety in the workplace.
